Mental Health First Aiders
The role of a Mental Health First Aider is to be a point of contact for an employee who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress. This interaction could range from having an initial conversation through to supporting the person to get appropriate help. Mental Health First Aiders are not trained to be therapists or psychiatrists but they can offer initial support through non-judgemental listening and guidance.
If you choose to speak to a Mental Health First Aider, anything you decide to talk about will be confidential.
You may be approached by a Mental Health First Aider to start a conversation about your mental health.
Craig Leak
'Men in the UK are three times more likely to die by suicide than women. However in construction – a male dominated industry– men are three times more likely to die by suicide than the national average for men. Stress, depression and anxiety are the second biggest cause of work-related ill health in the construction industry. These stats along with my own experience of witnessing first hand the impacts of mental health drove me to become a Mental Health First Aider.
I am no therapist, but I am here to listen, reassure and respond.'
