Gas Detection

If a water pipe is not under pressure or the noise from the leak cannot easily be heard then Tracer gas can be a very useful technique to locate water leaks in: Customer Supply Pipes, Underwater Heating Systems, Boilers, Central Heating Systems, Mains Distribution Networks.

The Tracer gas is introduced into the pipe with the leak from a cylinder of gas. The tracer gas used to find water leaks is a mixture of hydrogen (5%) and nitrogen(95%) making it completely safe to use in drinking water supplies being both non-toxic and non-corrosive. The tracer gas contains hydrogen, which is the lightest and smallest molecule in the atmosphere, which will exit at the leak point and make its way to the surface where it is detected by the highly sensitive Variotec 460 gas detector.

HWS(UK)Ltd experienced staff can identify and locate even the smallest of water supply pipe leaks with gas detection equipment. The gas, inserted via a meter box, outside tap or a fitting on the pipe finds it’s way to the damaged area and then seeps out and rises to be detected by the detection probe. Widely used by water companies this leak detection methodology has proved itself time and again.

Any size pipe but most effective on domestic supply’s

  • Mixture of 5% hydrogen and 95% nitrogen is 100% safe

  • Gas will penetrate all surface types

  • Quick and often leaks can be pin-pointed without the need to excavated saving time and money
